Part 1: Mind Games

Neural_WebYou are enough. There is no lack. It is all in your mind. Your mind is playing games. It wants to be in charge, rule your world. It comes up with amazing fantasies that are so believable you fall for it hook, line and sinker. It even convinces you that you have no control over what you think. Like a jealous sibling, it’s always on the look-out to trip you up and succeeding far too often. A Course in Miracles calls this part of your mind the ego. It tells you things like: You are not enough You’ll never be good enough You’re a lousy … mother, father, daughter, son, boss… You should have a … boyfriend, wife, husband, job… And you think
There must be something wrong with me There IS something wrong with me What’s wrong with me? By now you’re in such a state, you go and make a hot chocolate, grab the biscuits and chocolates you’ve been hiding and stuff your face. Now your mind has even more to say: Fat slob, you’re disgusting, stuffing yourself like that! Told you, there’s something wrong with you! This just proves it, you big, fat, lazy slob! No wonder you get fed-up, feel low and glower at the world. All that self talk! Now get this:  Self talk happens every day, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, year in and year out.  The smart guys who can figure these things say we think around 80,000 thoughts per day. They say around 10% of those thoughts are about organising your life. Things like what to wear, what to eat and drink and the like. The rest they say are the same old thoughts going round and round your head. Look at the maths: 10% of 80,000 thoughts a day is to organise your life. That’s 8,000. That leaves the rest – 72,000 thoughts – to mill around your head, day in, day out.  Now multiply the number of ‘involuntary’ self talk you are exposed to every day by 365 and you get a phenomenal 26,280,000 – call it 26 million. We’re not done yet. How old are you? Multiply 26 million with your age…  Even if you subtract the first 12 years of your life, the number is still mind boggling. Like a Stuck Record And if this self-talk is all about running yourself down, being hard on yourself, being hard on others, criticising your job, your life, your situation – boy! Isn’t that a lot of negativity and a fertile breeding ground for depression?! Photo Credit: Gerard
