On Shedding Light and Being the Light

Darkness, light, shedding light, be the light, casting light, dark, light and dark, contrastene

Marianne Williamson is one of my favourite authors.

No surprise then that I have a collection of her books; the most recent addition being A year of Miracles, a collection of daily devotions and reflections to help you develop a positive, loving mindset and encourage you to live your best self to bring miracles into your life.

You are supposed to take these daily devotions one day at a time, letting them sink in, contemplating them, savouring their wisdom so they can touch your soul and work their miracles. Not me. I want to take it in in one go. Like a glutton; binge eating. I guess you’d call this binge-reading!

Still… there are those that stand out, catch my attention and speak more deeply to me than others.

Like this reflection for day 145 On Shedding Light:

There is a way of being in the world that transcends the world, a way of being regular people and miracle-workers at the same time. We become the lamps that shed the light that emanates from the electricity of God.

No one feels deeply at home on this plane; it is not where we come from, and it is not where we are ultimately headed. It is a place where we stay but for a little while, beautiful and blessed when we allow our perceptions of it to be overshadowed by His, but a way station nonetheless.

We are here because we have a mission: to be the love that is missing in a loveless world and thus reclaim this darkened world for light.

It touches me deeply because it is in line with one of the five mind shifts I teach in my How to Seamlessly Integrate Spirituality into Your Life webinar: Live from love not fear. We are love and our purpose is to be love and loving. As A Course in Miracles teaches, Love created me like itself.

So here is my question:

If you are love and your purpose is to be love and loving, how are you expressing your love in the world?

    • Are you being kind to yourself and others?
    • Do you care for yourself and others like you would care for someone or something you deeply treasure?
    • Do you love what you do? Do you do your work with love even if it is not what you love?
    • How are your relationships? Your health? Your wealth?
    • Does love show up in all aspects of your life or only some?
    • What kind of love? The kind that says ‘I will love you as long as you give me what I want’ or the kind that loves regardless? Without an agenda?
    • Where have you built barriers against love? Where are you holding out and not letting love in?

When I was a young woman, I questioned how someone could love me if I did not love myself first.

Little did I realise how profound that was at the time. Now I can see that in a way it was my version of being the change I wanted to see in the world.

What about you?

    • How are you being in the world?
    • Are you being the change you want to see in the world?

Back in the Corporate World where I spent twenty-plus years, there was a saying that you were either part of the problem or part of the solution.

That is true no matter the context. You can live in fear and buy into the fear of this world, or you can make it your intention to live from love and be a light in the world.

That does not mean you will never feel fear again, that your life will be trouble-free and it will be a cosy ride all the way. It does mean that when fear strikes, when problems crop up, when you are struck by a dark night of the soul, you will have the mental, spiritual and emotional resilience to ride it out, grow from it, be stronger for the experience and shine your light even brighter.

What say you? Do you accept your mission? Will you be the love that is missing in this world and in the words of Marianne Williamson, help reclaim this darkened world for light?

Only you can decide. But this I urge you to remember: You are love and you are loved, so loved.
