Welcome To My New Blog…

Well, well… what do you know…  I now have a blog 🙂

So welcome! Welcome! I hope over time you will find something here to inspire you, make you think, and then think again. When that happens, in fact at any time, please leave a comment.

Let me tell you a bit about myself.

I grew up in South Africa, yes, that’s right, apartheid South Africa.

If you want me in tears, bawling my eyes out, give me the book Invictus, by John Carlin, to read. Of course, there is now a film by the same name. Personally, I prefer the book and highly recommend it. It is a sterling account of the leadership of Nelson Mandela.

I came to England at the end of the last century when the world was preparing for Y2K. You may remember the fear and dread of collapsing computer systems due to the millennium change. I was working in the computer industry in the financial sector, so had my share of testing out system changes to prepare for Y2K before arriving in the UK.

The plan was to come for two years. Eleven+ years and some months later, I am still here, grown-up children ‘n all. After twenty-two or so years in the corporate world going from computer programmer to project management and some other interesting roles, I am now a self-employed consultant.

My passions have evolved from how bits and bytes work to how people work, what makes them tick, what makes them do what they do and why is it that some people have endless struggles and others seem to glide through life without touching sides.

In some ways I seem to have gone full circle: Having started out working life as a Diagnostic Radiographer, taking X-rays of injured or sick people, I then went into IT and became more and more interested in people. So much so that I trained as a Personal Development Coach and followed it up with more training as a Corporate and Executive Coach

Can you tell I am a personal development junkie? Eventually, I realised that as a radiographer, I worked with BODIES, that instrument that helps people reach their goals. Now I work with PEOPLE, their desires, their pain, their dreams.

Why do I do that? To help smooth life for another.  Make it a bit easier, a bit less painful. Is that soppy? Well, after many years as a hard nut, perhaps I am mellowing at last!

So my business started out helping people with difficult conversations, those conversations you know you should have but you dread the outcome.

Of course, sometimes it so happens that you’re in the middle of an innocent discussion when the other person suddenly blows up at you.

How do you handle that? What happens to the relationship?

Conflict and strong emotions can make us do strange things, hurtful things and we pay a high price for that. I know. So why hurt like that when there’s someone who can lend a helping hand or ear or offer a few suggestions?

Do I have all the answers? No, most definitely not. But I do have a load of questions and sometimes when I least expect it, a probable answer appears which I then set about to test in my own life.  So I’ll share what comes up, what’s worked for me and a few insights and musings along the way.
