I know a good system when I see one.
It comes from having been in systems all my life: first Radiography and then Information Technology. I am endlessly fascinated by separate components that come together like cogs in a wheel to produce a result that is greater than the whole.
Let me explain.
When I was a radiographer and CAT scans, a.k.a., Computer Assisted Tomography, made an appearance in the medical world, I wanted to be part of it. I was mesmerised by the way a computer, an X-ray machine, an operating table, a screen and keyboard came together to produce photographic images from which a diagnosis could be made.
It was miraculous.
I was in love. With a machine. A Siemens Somatom 2. Soon I was the expert and go-to person.
In awe of what you could do with a computer, I wanted more. Next stop Information Systems.
I discovered I was a natural analyst: programs, data, systems, business. Right up my street. My spot-on analysis of problems and effective solutions earned me much recognition and once again I became the go-to person. Trusted and respected.
My world was full of systems: operating systems, database management systems, cash management systems, payment systems, reconciliation systems, ledger systems, and billing systems. The list goes on. Each one composed of many different moving parts that came together to deliver more than the sum of its parts; some more robust than others. Not unlike us human beings.
Yup, I know about systems. I know a good one when I see one. That’s why, when I discovered the Entrepreneurial Operating System, EOS for short, my heart skipped a beat. Here was a complete set of simple concepts and practical tools to help entrepreneurs get what they want from their businesses.
